Overview

On April 4, 2026, Burnaby Neighbourhood Works Society (BNW) organized a Residents and Mayor Roundtable Dialogue to create an opportunity for direct conversation between Burnaby residents and municipal leaders.

The event brought together residents, the Mayor, and a City Councilor to discuss key issues shaping Burnaby's future, including economic development, housing and urban planning, infrastructure, public safety, healthcare, education, and neighbourhood wellbeing.

Discussion Highlights

Residents shared questions, perspectives, and ideas on a wide range of topics affecting Burnaby's future, including:

Economic Development and Future Growth

  • How Burnaby can attract and support emerging industries, including artificial intelligence (AI), technology, and innovation.

  • Strategies for attracting talent, strengthening the local economy, and maintaining Burnaby's competitiveness in a changing global environment.

  • Opportunities to enhance Burnaby's profile through major international events and initiatives.

Housing, Urban Planning, and Community Livability

  • Managing rapid population growth and high-density development while maintaining livable neighbourhoods.

  • The impact of major developments on transportation, schools, public services, and existing communities.

  • Neighbourhood character, including concerns related to oversized homes, privacy, sunlight, and compatibility with surrounding areas.

  • The impact of transit-oriented development policies on community density, infrastructure capacity, and quality of life.

Public Services and Infrastructure

  • Whether healthcare, schools, transportation, and other public services are keeping pace with Burnaby's population growth.

  • The progress and future capacity of major projects, including the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment.

  • Infrastructure improvements needed to support growing communities.

Transportation, Construction, and Neighbourhood Impacts

  • Road safety, traffic congestion, lighting, and transportation challenges in growing neighbourhoods.

  • Construction impacts, including noise, cleanliness, safety concerns, and effects on residents' daily lives.

  • Community concerns related to traffic enforcement and neighbourhood safety.

Public Safety and Social Issues

  • Community safety concerns and the impact of social challenges on neighbourhood wellbeing.

  • Discussions around balancing compassion, public safety, and the needs of all residents.

Housing Policies and Rental Issues

  • The balance between tenant protections and landlord responsibilities.

  • Challenges within the current rental housing framework and opportunities for a fair and sustainable system.

  • Potential impacts of housing policies on both renters and housing providers.

Community Impact

The roundtable provided residents with a meaningful opportunity to share their perspectives directly with municipal representatives and discuss issues affecting Burnaby's future.

BNW believes strong communities are built through open communication, respectful dialogue, and active participation.

Through initiatives such as the Residents and Mayor Roundtable Dialogue, BNW continues to create opportunities for residents, elected officials, and community stakeholders to exchange ideas and work toward practical solutions.

Together, we can help build a safer, more connected, and sustainable Burnaby.
